1984

There's alot to be said for a band who, 25 years after their inception are not only still relevant, have not only insprired thousands of hardcore punk bands over the years, but whose influence has spawned an international genre unto itself. That having been said, I'll say very little about this release except to say if you're not already familiar with this band's catalog, get busy punk. This is one of the rarest, if not the rarest, releases by these ground-breaking British punks. This Japanese-only singles collection LP undoubtably inspired countless Japanese hardcore punk bands throughout the 1980's as well.

This one goes out to Benni and SS Kaliert for keeping the spirit alive! In an age where British, American and to a lesser extent Finnish and Swedish punk bands of yesteryear are heralded in high esteem, Germany's contribution to punk rock is often sadly overlooked. Is it the language barrier? Probably not, many of the bands sung in English. Maybe it's the fact that very few classic German punk titles have been re-released and made available worldwide? Whatever the case may be, the contributions of such great bands as The Razors, Slime, The Boskops, Vomit Visions, Upright Citizens, Normahl, OHL, Toxoplasma and many others seem largely forgotten. The Maniacs were one such classic German punk band who, as far as I know, only had one other release, the "salute the survivors" 7" on the beautifully obscure Pogar Records label.

Rare German pressing of one of the most-loved punk rock albums of all time, with a unique photo sleeve. Like Discharge, there's not much to say about this not-so-obscure band that hasn't already been said. Sure, they could be your dad, but your dad was probably in some lousy Van Halen cover band in 1982. Not nearly as cool.

KOHU 63

How do you spell pogo punk? K-o-h-u 63! Not ashamed to blatantly rip off some golden Motorhead riffs, Kohu 63 were one of those awesome, obscure, and short-lived bands that shall forever live on in the hearts of those punk fans lucky enough to own their records. Debuting in 1981 with their raw Pelimannimusaa 7", the band quickly followed up with this gem of an eight song mini-LP. Kohu 63 released their first full-length album in 1982 and then disappeared, returning briefly in 1986 with the release of their "Kolme vuotta myöhemmin" 7" which lacked much of the inspiration that made their early material so great. Disappearing once again until 1989, the band released four more 7"s between 1989 and 1991. They wouldn't be heard from again until the year 2000 when they released their second full-length album "Neljällä vuosikymmenellä".

Rosa Honung (Sweden)
1984

One of Sweden's best loved and earliest hardcore punk bands, "Plikten Fram For Allt" was Asta Kask's third ep and their first on the Rosa Honung label. After releasing their first ep "for kung and fosterland" in 1981, the original line-up quickly fell apart. Guitarist/vocalist Micke Menlos put together a new line-up of the band and after a short two months of rehearsal the new line-up released the awesome "En Tyst Minut" ep. "Plikten Fram For Allt", in my opinion, is Asta Kask at their best with the new line-up having solidified  their sound after a year of heavy gigging. Before disbanding in 1986, the band released the excellent "Med Is I Magen" 12" ep and the still pretty good "An Finns Det Hop" 7".

Spitfire Boys (England)
"british refugee / mein kampf"
7"
RKO Records (England)
1977
The first and only great single by the early Liverpool punk band, The Spitfire Boys. This original pressing was never issued with a picture sleeve but it was later re-issued in Germany with a nice full color sleeve. This first single featured the first recorded output by Budgie who later went on to join the Slits, then Siouxsie And The Banshees, eventually marrying Siouxsie. Other notable musicians include Paul Rutherford who went on to 80's lame pop sensations Frankie Goes to Hollywood! The band fell apart shortly after the release of this single but guitarist and songwriter David Littler put together a new band and released a second single under the name the Spitfire Boys. Although limited to 1000 copies and extremely rare, this second single was (in my opinion) uninspired new-wavy crap that bore little resemblance to the great raw punk rock of the original Spitfire Boys.

Dave Goodman & Friends (England)
"justifiable homicide"
7"
The Label (England)
1977
A classic one-off punk single by the late punk rock producer, musician and scenester/mogul Dave Goodman. Goodman was inspired to put this project together after the well-publicized death by internal bleeding of Liddle Towers after being released from police custody. Goodman played in many pub rock bands throughout the mid 60's to mid 70's until he witnessed the Sex Pistols for the first time in early '76 while working as their sound man. Goodman produced their earliest material which later showed up on the b-side of the "Great RocknRoll Swindle" album as well as their unreleased raw first album which was later bootlegged as the "Spunk" LP.  In 1977 Goodman began "the label" record label and went on to produce UK punk legends such as the UK Subs, the Vibrators, Eater, the Maniacs, the Users, Chelsea and many more. The un-credited guitar and drum work on this single was performed by Steve Jones and Paul Cook of the Sex Pistols. Other musicians on the record included Jammie Wilde, twin brother of Bay City Rollers front man Les McLuen. The b-side of this single is a weird instrumental but the a-side is a true classic '77 punk ripper!

Widows (Finland)
"wall of berlin"

Poko Records (Finland)
1979
The second of three ep's by one of Finland's first and best! "Wall Of Berlin" was their first release on the great Poko Records label, now unfortunately owned by mega-conglomerate EMI. As much as we would love to include an MP3 sample of this one for you, we've already had a run in with the wonderful people at EMI and their attorneys, over the cover and name of the Chaotic Dischord "now that's what I call a fuckin' racket" CD that we released a few years ago. The Widows ruled the late 70's Finnish punk scene along with fellow legends Briard, Eppu Normaali, Sensuuri and others. Their first ep "Overscrupulous", third ep "We're Coming" and their only album "Fun?" are also great and worth hearing if you can find them!

Agent Orange (Netherlands)
"hello boy friend, coming my way?" aka "VD"

New Wave Records (France)
1984
The second ep by one of the best Dutch punk bands ever, Agent Orange (not to be mistaken for the California band) started in the late 70's as "Jesus and the Gospel Fuckers". After hearing Discharge for the first time around 1981 they took on a harder sound, changed their name to Agent Orange and released their first ep "your mother sucks cocks in hell". Not only was AO a great band but they were also one of the most outspoken bands against the proliferation of political hippies in punk. We think that rules!

YEAR
CHAOS (aka CHAOZ) (England) "tribal warfare" 7" Pogar Records (Germany) 1984

Chaos were one of the more obscure and under-rated bands of the early 80's UK scene, due mainly to the fact that despite having been around since 1980 and gigging with every UK band that mattered (including Discharge, UK Subs, Destructors, Subhumans, Business etc..) they didn't manage to get their sole ep released until 1984. And when it finally was released, it came out on the obscure German "Pogar" label not long before the beginning of the slow, often painful (to watch) death of the 80's UK punk scene. Chaos were all about having a good time and not giving a fuck so to Chaos we raise a pint!

Damned - Machacalo (smash it up) 7" EP
BAND/COUNTRY RECORD TITLE FORMAT LABEL/COUNTRY YEAR
THE DAMNED (England) "machacalo (smash it up)" 7" Movie Play Records (Spain) 1979

Rare Spanish pressing of  the Damned's classic single from their third album "Machine Gun Etiquette". Features a different photo than other pressings and printed on textured paper. One of the "big three" bands of the 70's UK punk generation, in our opinion the Damned were much more musically competent than the Sex Pistols and more fun than the Clash.

Ebba Gron - Total Pop 7" EP
BAND/COUNTRY RECORD TITLE FORMAT LABEL/COUNTRY YEAR
EBBA GRON (Sweden) "total pop" 7" Mistlur Records (Sweden)  1979

Ebba Gron were one of the first and biggest Swedish punk bands ever. During their early "golden years" of 1976 to 1979 they released three great 7"s and one great LP before opting for a more artsy pop sound and finally breaking up in 1983. "Total Pop" was their third and last cool ep before releasing their "We're Only In It For The Drugs" LP and then going downhill. Ebba Gron also launched the prolific and successful solo career of frontman Joakim Thastrom which continues to this day.

Ghoul - Oi! Oi! 7" flexi
BAND/COUNTRY RECORD TITLE FORMAT LABEL/COUNTRY YEAR
GHOUL (Japan) "Oi! Oi!" 7" Flexi Hold Up Records (Japan) 1985
Another great Japanese hardcore band with "street" influences. During their short time together, Ghoul released two 7"s, "carry out fucking" and "jerusalem" in 1985 before releasing their final record, this one-sided, one-song 7" flexi disc. Ghoul's frontman and Japanese punk scenester Masami went on to record a solo ep that was released after his death in the early 90's.
